The Society of Women Engineers Celebrates 40 Years

(upbeat music) – SWE to me, is a community of women who want support each other
and inspire others as well. – Anyone on campus can
join, so both women and men. And it’s really promoting more females to pursue engineering. – MIT SWE began in 1979, and since then it has just grown. – The Society of Women Engineers is one of the largest
student clubs on campus. And I think specifically tonight, is celebrating the 40th
anniversary of SWE’s founding, so I think like, that not
only is an opportunity to reconnect with the alumni community. To have them come back and kind of inspire the younger
generations of students to also pursue their
passions in the STEM fields. – I think it’s actually
a really special event, not just because it’s commemorating the 40th anniversary of MIT SWE, but also because its like a
good way for everyone to kind of be aware of what SWE does, and unite the whole community. – So the reason for this
event is to talk about all the cool things that
we have done in the past, and that we are doing, and
what we’re planning to do. – Even though I was part of SWE, I didn’t realize the
huge importance of having like a gender balance
until this past summer. Where I worked as an intern at a company, and my team was actually
like very evenly split between men and women, and
I was surprised because it did make a really big difference. – I think it’s a space that in the past has been predominantly men, and it’s something that’s very feasible for women to pursue. It’s just harder when
you see in the workplace there’s just not as many
women, and not as many female role models So I think like the Society of
Women Engineers really helps show that it is a possibility
and that it can be really exciting. (upbeat music)
