Michael Duyzend – Developing a culture of constructive criticism

greetings i’m Michael Duyzend, a resident
physician in pediatrics and medical genetics at Boston Children’s Hospital
and a guest editor for The Journal of Pediatrics. I’d like to touch upon two questions regarding peer review today first why is peer review important?
Peer review is important for many reasons but I’d like to touch upon three today the
first is that peer review assures the quality of manuscripts second peer
review allows direct feedback to authors to improve manuscripts and allows
reviewers to see manuscripts in process to make their own manuscripts better and
of higher quality third peer review brings the scientific and medical communities closer together by developing a culture of quality
improvement constructive criticism and giving back to the community
the second question I’d like to touch upon is how can journals ensure high
quality peer review again I’d like to highlight three different ways this is
possible first reviewers and authors and everybody in the peer review community
should continue to foster the culture of review and peer review this certainly
takes time but authors appreciate honest and exact feedback from reviewers and
authors when they’re called to be reviewers should give back in the same
way to their colleagues manuscripts second it can be important to pair a
seasoned reviewer with fellows and students to train a new generation of
reviewers and people who will be involved in the peer review process
third it’s important to ensure diversity in review of all forms including making
sure junior and senior faculty and institutions are involved different
institutions and indeed different nationalities are involved in the
process together as a community scientific medical and peer review we
can continue to develop a proactive and in culture of peer-review thanks very
much
