grown-ish | Season 2, Episode 17 Trailer | Is Vivek Appropriating Black Culture?

Aw, snap! This my joint! Vivek’s appropriating our culture. Period. Dude. This is our boy we’re talking about here, okay? [Doug] You don’t find it odd that when we text each other he sends me the black thumbs up emoji? I find it more odd that two grown-ass men text with emojis. Okay. Why do you guys think Vivek is appropriating? From the Gucci he rocks to the music he listens to— And all the drugs that he deals. Huh? Which have absolutely nothing to do with black culture.

  1. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Ana was sooo wrong for that ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ the writers were sooo wrong for that ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ but Doug needs to chill why is always giving vivek a hard time Vivek is adorable

  2. Iโ€™m just saying thereโ€™s 20 episode in the season and we are almost at 17 ….Iโ€™m still waiting for the unpredictable moment or something that has us on the edge of our seats ๐Ÿ’บ

  3. Vivek is a person of color… if dresses preppy he's "acting white," his people get judged and mistreated just like black people, anyway maybe if more people like Vivek were represented in the media he'd have more of an outlet.

  4. Vivek is black he may not be african but he is black so what is the big deal. Leave my boy alone!!! Plus he gets a thumbs up from me (a black thumb) cause he always openly voices his love for black women!!!!

  5. I get the Black Hand, this just weird. But I don't think listening to "Black Music" and wearing Gucci is exclusive to Black People. Is it? I don't think so.

I'm not Black but I love listening to Beyonce, Lizzo, Rihanna. Am I appropriating it? I love them, Lizzo makes me so happy and powerful. Idk I don't think "Black Music" is appropriation. And Gucci is firstly a company, right? Its not a Daishiki, right? Idk this feels like a stretch. But educate me if I'm wrong, I'm willing to correct my behavior if I am wrong.

  6. What does him wearing Gucci and listening to a certain style of music have to do with appropriating culture? Those twins on the show are terrible

  7. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I'm weeeeeak. Vivek sends the black thumbs up emoji? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  8. This is more of a reach than a midget tryna dunk on a hoop.smh ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ also the black thumbs up is like dark brown and Vivek people some of em look like they play hoops w the sun ๐ŸŒž

  9. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ โ€œthe drugs that he dealsโ€ when I heard that I swear I started rolling.

  10. Well, Iโ€™m black but I like to use white emojis!!

  11. Every culture steals from every other culture. That's why we have rock and roll, jazz, and sushi in big American cities. People shouldn't steal without attribution. That is intellectual dishonesty. ๐Ÿ˜œ

  12. Interesting. He's brown tho and loves black women and supports black ppl. How is he supposed to act? Wtf does Gucci have to do with being black??

  13. Okay, seriously most of the designer brands that is out there are not black culture. Who ever wrote this episode needs to do research.

  14. To everyone losing their minds in the comments, yโ€™all gotta realize this show is a pure joke, like nothing on here is serious. This episode along with every other one is just made for entertainment, so yโ€™all can calm down now

  15. You don't give Vivek a storyline and when you do is about cultural appropriation? the boy is from India, their culture gets appropriated all the time.
Give him a relationship, I hope they cast Jordyn to date him

  16. This show is nothing how it was in season 1. It had great potential itโ€™s just boring and sucks now.

  17. Vivek is the most underrated character on the show. He gets barely any screen time has never been giving any romantic interests. Is often treated as the butt of many of the friends jokes but never treats his friends with anything but kindness. Why on earth would you do this to him. Only a few episodes ago he was talking about Aron and Doug were basically the only people at the school he could relay on. For show thats supposed to be woke and breaking stereotypes. Why on earth would they continue to give the only asian character the same old tired asian character tropes. Also he's not appropriating black culture. since when is wearing gucci only for black people?

  18. Iโ€™m so confused rn I canโ€™t even… are Indian-Americans not supposed to listen to hip-hop or wear branded clothes? Iโ€™m Indian and I never got that message. Thatโ€™s like me saying someone who isnโ€™t Indian canโ€™t like Bollywood! Plus many Indians are dark skinned, the skin tone isnโ€™t representative of culture, so the emoji thing makes no sense!

  19. They never know how to correctly talk about the ยซย heavyย ยป subject that they bring, its always brushed or they dont cover it well, I would prefer if they stick to the comedy and character development…

  20. This is his skin color ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ this is what he is using ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฟ but other than that they are be dramatic

  21. Like is this supposed to be a joke. Get this show some gotdammed black writers and maybe then it would be good and accurate.

  22. I honestly thought they were gonna make Sky and Vivek be a couple to give them more depth and to actually focus on them but instead we got Aaron and Ana who were together for 4 episodes then broke up…. But I digress

  23. Ana really needs to watch what she says in front of black company. If those wasn't her friends, her ass would have been handed to her asap.

  24. We need to stop with this apropating bs if he/she repect the culture i got no problem with it

  25. So… Gucci, Music, brushing your hair, dark skinned emojis, and slang make up black culture? ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ
If people are really checking others for this – you need to get a hobby. Let people live.

  26. I hate how the writes portray Vivek. he barely has lines and when he does itโ€™s only because of him being in a problematic situation. Do better! He has an interesting story I would love to see him interact with his first gen family especially his father.

  27. A fashion brand isnโ€™t a part of any raceโ€™s culture, Doug and Vivek weโ€™re supposed to be friends and now all of a sudden Vivek is problematic? Thatโ€™s not good writing come on now

  28. This show…..Gosh. Really you are harping on him for using a emoji a few shades darker than his skin? Isn't he Indian anyways? And you are harping on him for wearing a Italian brand because …many rich black people wear it (even though other people wear it). And you harp on him for supporting listening to black music which without non black people these black people wouldn't be as successful as they are without their support. And the fact music is universal. This show when it talks about stupid topics like these make people when shows ACTUALLY talk about actual racism and issues not take it seriously. Because we are harping on people for the most menial crap. How can anyone live life like that? I'm black but this show sometimes…sheesh. Maybe some people are right…we are getting a bit too sensitive at times…

  29. Quite interested in seeing where this episode goes because all the things they listed are also super common in mainstream brown culture.

  30. Diggy should go back to saying Hot tomatay in rev runs house cause he hardly has anything fruitful to say ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ˜’

  31. Vivek better go off about how people appropriate brown culture all the time and make everyone shut up.

  32. Yโ€™all need to chill lol the episode hasnโ€™t came out yet and yโ€™all are already adding your 2 cents. Just wait to see what theyโ€™re saying.

  33. A lot of you all need to read an academic article on Cultural Appropriation. It is a real thing and this nation has a long history of doing this to Black people. Think Elvis, Iggy and her "blaccent" , white girls claiming they invented twerking, calling Bantu Knots mini buns when white girls want them. Just a few examples

  34. Selling drugs is not apart of our culture it's American culture they need to get rid of the white writers

  35. I just got done watching this upset and I am highly disappointed smh..
I personally feel what Vivek was doing wasn't a big deal and I was hoping he was going to stand up to (What's his name cause I forgot ๐Ÿ˜‚) besides apologizing.
Everything he was doing was harmless.
I'm black btw if that matters ๐Ÿ™„ lol
