AI and Future Society: Ghislaine Boddington

So, yes, I’m Ghislaine Boddington I’m Creative Director of body>data>space and one of the co-curators of FutureFest So my background is in performing arts – and that’s quite important – I’ve got a long-term work now – I’ve been working with the body the living, live body and technology integration. And our key points from the body>data>space stance is that the body is the interface for the technology ahead. So we explore the value and the values of body data. So, my personal opinion – putting this into the crowd: my body, my data. Like organ donation I believe we should have opt in and opt out systems and a choice around ourselves in data terms as well as we do physically. My body at the moment has around it numerous fragmented bits of data that exist all around me at all times My birth information, passport, my tax stuff, financial and all the social data that I put out there. And also today new information which is coming from my body itself transmitted outwards, from wearables, from apps whether it’s my heart beat, the number of steps I’ve taken that day, the nutrition I’ve done, how much sleep I’ve had – this is all part of the data floating out there around me. Now after many years of working with body sensors into interactive environments, public space, art installations etc – Creating collaborative spaces where the body data actually enables a group conversation with sounds, with visuals and with other media, I’ve come to the conclusion now that when a heartbeat creates visuals and touch enables sound it is quite clear that we don’t just transmit our body data out, but we receive back other data. This is what we call in body>data>space, the hyper-enhanced self and this is part of the new experience economy that we are all moving into today. So today I have my physical my body, and, at the moment, my fragmented data body and my physical body is my sensory, transmission and reception interface and onwards we know the debate is on with the evolution of AI all around us and potentially deeper collaborations of ourselves with machines How do we actually get our data to work for us? How do we actually start to co-operate and converse with AI itself. So my belief is that we need to return to our bodies and we need to re-imagine from a very different view how we prioritise our own individual agency within this debate. Number one: I have my data body, number two: I have my physical body; what I’m saying here is that I want my data body tethered to my physical body. And I want AI to help me to have that bridge, to enable me to have a conversation with myself between those two cells that I have. Now facebook today – they tell us that they have collected 96 different types of data categories which they hold on us. But they also totally assure us that we can turn them on and off as we want to. So I would like a personal data body dashboard, for myself – I would like that dashboard to have my two types of data in it.. One – my public data which actually can be automatically switched on when I get my dashboard and that public can be used for social purpose and for global good. And that public data should be anonymous and it should be open data, I also should be allowed to switch it off if I want to. My second type of data is my private data and that is with permission and I would like to have the right to do those permissions to be anonymous, to give it to small groups, just to keep it for me, to put it into the collective and communal environment even to monetize it – but my choice is there. So just to speed fast forward quickly, we are also at a point now in the next 10, 20, 30, years when we are internalising data tools. implants, mini-bots – which go through the blood system, chemical gels – these are all now programmable, they transmit and receive data, and they can be connected and encrypted but they will be inside our bodies. Many people are already working with this. They’re all there to enhance us – to enhance our senses, our perceptions, our awareness. And with AI added, they can help us with monitoring and predicting our lives and our decisions. We can all engage with this, and we can actually use this data for social purpose into communal pools and we make her own decisions as ethical individuals, making our choices out there. So the AI data body, tethered to my physical body, from birth is what I would like. Supporting and enabling me need to deal with this complex weave of AI Processes to give me the best outcomes In conversation with myself, my multi-self – my data body being portable, being transferable into my avatars, into my robotics, into whatever representation of me but I am putting out there. It would solve many of today’s emerging issues so my call is to give me my body data space please.
