♪ [music] ♪ – [Roy] The Sickle Cell Initiative is a
portfolio of programs recognizing a need in our community to provide better care
for patients with sickle cell disease and to provide better resources for the
physicians and scientists around the world who study and do research on sickle cell
disease. – [Martha] It started in 2015 when our
board decided that they really needed to do something about sickle cell disease. It’s related to hematology. We’re an association of hematologists so
they said “It’s unconscionable that we’re not doing something about this.” – Sickle cell disease is one of the first
diseases to be understood as a genetic disease but we’re still not improving the
care of the patients with this disease. – Because sickle cell disease is a rare
disease, every institution, every researcher only has
a little bit of data. We formed the ASH Research Collaborative
that includes a data hub to use big data to pool together information from patients
across the country. – We’re providing hematologists with
better tools through what we call evidence-based guidelines and then at a
worldwide level, helping less-resourced countries develop programs to do newborn
screening to identify babies that are born with sickle cell disease. My hope for the future of this program is
it will have a long life, that it will grow over time,
that we will be able to provide access to care, and importantly,
we will help advance treatments that could be cures for sickle cell disease. – It’s a very exciting time to be involved
in this discipline, in this organization and our members say to us,
” We’re so proud that ASH has decided to do this. We love being a part of this.” ♪ [music] ♪
